New Testament – videos

May 11, 2009

REACH library has the New Testament brought to life through colourful and true to the Word stories of Jesus’ life and ministry.  Brought to the screen by Nest Entertainment, these adaptations are so scriptural and Biblical.  I have used these personally to bring our Bible class to life and have seen the fruit of the hard work and care that went in to making these films.  A great addition to any family devotion time or classroom curriculum  When the headlines speak of difficult financial times, we must teach our children to have faith in God’s love as we turn to Him to overcome the world’s problems.

Creative story-lines and wonderful acting with well-known actors enhance every story. These VHS movies were originally made for A&E and spare no expense to make them authentic and believable historical fiction.  Elaborate sets, remarkable acting and fabulous stories will captivate and entertain the entire family. Young apprentices in every story learn from their teachers. Combining the greatest inventors, composers and artists and a young apprentice makes the stories easier for your child to relate to and fun to watch.

Konos Curriculum

May 11, 2009

If you teach with unit studies, you have probably already seen Konos curriculum.  If you do not teach using unit studies you should still take a look at the Konos curriculum.  Here are Konos’ goals:

  • To train our children in Godly character…  by focusing on character traits.
  • To create a true love of learning in each child… by teaching hands-on and using discovery learning to foster critical thinking.
  • To be a family… by learning as much as we can as a family in true multi-level fashion that builds life long relationships.
  • To achieve academic excellence… by immersing the children in units that integrate all subjects.
  • To equip parents to become master teachers of their own children… by sharing 20 years of teaching experience in seminars, videos, tapes, articles, speeches, and personal helps.

I have picked up the Konos Curriculum so many times in teaching my children because the books are packed with information and activities in a very Christian manner.  Konos stresses family learning and their curriculum books assist in allowing your family to do the same thing.  Flip through the book at REACH Library and you’ll see how it could be a blessing to your homeschool journey.

The Mystery of History – Hobar

May 9, 2009

We have LOVED this program!!!  It is so complete and easy for teachers, and educationaland exciting for students that no one is left without interest.  Hobar has written 3 volumes so far but is hoping to write 5.  The series is written in chronological order beginning at creation and in the hopes to be completed with the present.  In this Bible-centered series, Hobar writes as if she were writing a letter to a child.  The lessons are personal, with side comments which explain difficult words or just add interpretation of an event.  Although she has divided her third volume into two books, the first two have everything in one book.  And I mean everything!  Hobar gives clear instructions for everything that she has included, such as mapping, time-line ideas, tests, reviews, clearly explained projects, diagrams, memory cards and more.

The series has been developed in such a way that it can be adapted for younger, middle and older children so it is very family friendly.  Each lesson includes follow-up activities for each level so high school aged children are challenged with thought provoking assignments while younger children has simple, fun activities.  I am sure that your family will be blessed by Hobar’s series.  Since the series is so inclusive, you’ll have to come in to REACH Library to take a look at it.

Christian Liberty Nature Readers

May 9, 2009

These are great books for early readers, especially those who love nature.  The Christian Liberty Press has published books that are easy to read and teach children all about God’s creation.  The gentle and yet exciting stories teach all about things that God has created; like butterflies, bears, weather, and much more.  Pictures and diagrams also accompany many of the pages.  Students in grade one and two would enjoy reading them but they are also wonderful for read-aloud during science time.  I have found my children even use the books for reference when they find a bug or see animal tracks.  There is just enough information for their little minds. Take a peak at them at the REACH Library.

Trailblazer Books – Dave & Neta Jackson

May 2, 2009

The Jackson’s have co-authored many books on marriage, family, relationships as well as the Trailblazer series.  The Trailblazer books are “thrilling adventure stories introducing young readers to Christian heroes of the past.”  They are fictional stories that include details that are authentic to the “hero’s” life.  Children will be captivated by the fast moving storyline and learn about Christians like Tubman, Tyndale, Newton, Luther, Slessor, Moody, Muller and more.  The Jackson’s are dedicated to their faith and excellent writers.  A great combination for young Christians eager to learn more about the history of many heroes of the faith.

A number of the Trailblazer Books have been donated to REACH Library.  Now you have the chance to read them.  If your child enjoys one of the books out the library, we would love to read his/her review of the book.

Jamie Soles – musician

May 2, 2009

Jamie Soles is an artist that every Christian family should have in their home.  Yes, I believe he has scripturally sound lyrics that tell all the Bible stories, not just the ones that have been used to teach morals to children.  The thing is with Jamie’s music is that it is not just for the children.  Moms, dads, teens and little ones love the fun, Biblical music that Jamie plays on his many Cd’s.  If you would like your family to learn scripture and have a great time doing it, sing along with the Soles family and you will know the laws, the patriarchs, memorials, psalms and much, much more.  Jamie and his wife homeschool their eight children in Alberta.  Their music is enjoyed in homes, churches, camps, schools and often…in dad’s car.

You can sample Jamie’s music by signing it out from the REACH library.  I’m sure you’ll want to purchase it at www.solmusic.ca before you return it.

God’s Design Series – Lawrences

May 2, 2009

The Lawrences’ put together a wonderful science series covering plants, earth, human body, heat and energy, inventions, weather, matter, atoms and molecules.  Each program is self contained with very little preparation needed for the teacher.  The hands-on activities are easy, fun and very educational.  Not twaddle or no busy work.  Each lesson is packed with scientific information, taught with a Christian perspective but are not too long or detailed for young ears.  Great for children ages 5-10, depending on which program you choose.  We enjoyed this series with the whole family.

Come and take a look at it in the REACH library.

Exploring Creation with… Botany, Zoology, etc. – Fulbright

May 2, 2009

Fulbright’s series, “Exploring Creation with…” are wonderful books for science instruction in a relaxed but intelligent way.  The books speak to you as if you were sitting on the couch with Fulbright as she shared her knowledge of science.  And that is how I used these books.  I sat with my children on the couch and I read from the books.  After the reading, the children would narrate back to me what was read and then we did the activity.  The projects were simple, the books included beautiful pictures and the children learned science topics with a creationist’s persuasion.  I read these books to my children but older children can easily read them on their own.  A lot of scientific information is taught in a very understandable and memorable way.

GREAT series for girls and boys; actually, the whole family. Come in to the REACH Library to take a look.
